Amsterdam Canal house

2021 | Amsterdam, The Netherlands

On the historic canals of Amsterdam, this charming waterfront home had been stripped and renovated for the rental market before being acquired by our young Brazilian clients. When Avenue Design Studio was approached to bring the property back to life, it was clear that a large-scale build was not what this home needed, but rather, a delicate reintroduction of the character that was lost along the way. The studio worked to reach this goal providing design support across the board including furniture sourcing and design, and the finishing of the spaces through art and artefacts.

Now, richly hued lime plaster walls and applied exposed brick form the textured foundation upon which our client’s ‘global modern’ dreamscape was built. A fresh colour scheme has reinvigorated the existing kitchen, while a coordinating island complete with wine bar was introduced to meet our clients practical needs. Warm russet and green tones were woven into the neutral backdrop, along with an eclectic assembly of furniture. In the living room, a curved mid century Danish cabinet makers sofa, an iconic Pierre Paulin Groovy chair, an Italian marble coffee table from the 70s and an African tribal Ashanti stool create a global yet tranquil space that sparks intrigue whilst prioritising comfort. In the dining room, a vintage Italian pink marble dining table is accompanied by a set of walnut and rush Vico Magistretti chairs.

In collaboration with artisan Albert Potgieter, the studio designed the walnut and webbing sideboard duo in the living room, conceived to contour the existing architecture as well as adapt to future environments with ease and grace. Its versatile and timeless design has made it an heirloom piece in our clients home. Rounded elements throughout this home were incorporated to offset the property’s narrow disposition, add intimacy and encourage flow between the spaces.
