PAULOWNA Townhouse

2025 | The Hague, The Netherlands

Avenue Design Studio presents the transformation of an elegant Art Nouveau townhouse in The Hague. Once divided into three student dwellings and stripped of its original character, this three-story property has been meticulously reimagined as a sophisticated private residence for our client, a well-travelled Scottish bachelor. At the heart of the project was the restoration of period details lost during earlier renovations. Wall paneling, architectural profiling, and Art Nouveau-inspired ceiling roses were thoughtfully reinstated, breathing new life into the home’s historic charm. These classic details were integrated with contemporary and vintage design elements, creating a layered, cohesive interior tailored to reflect our client’s refined taste and global influences. In the kitchen, a palette of olive-green is complemented by soft clay-finished walls. Furnished with a farmhouse table, a brass Florian Schulz counterweight pendant light, and a French wrought iron bistro table, the space underscores the effortlessly casual and approachable atmosphere envisioned from the outset.

Reclaimed materials are woven throughout the design, infusing each space with authenticity and a sense of nostalgia. Double antique hotel doors separate the kitchen and living room, creating a striking focal point that marries old-world charm with contemporary openness. In the attic art studio, a sculptural salvaged staircase ascends to a future roof terrace, set to be completed in the second phase of renovations. Guest bathrooms feature antique Carrara marble tiles, while the master suite blends contemporary marble with a farmhouse table-turned-vanity, crowned by a reclaimed stone sink. The master bedroom was designed to evoke warmth and intimacy. Entirely color-drenched in a rich, dark hue, enveloping the room in depth and sophistication, the space features striking planchette wooden flooring, laid in a double herringbone pattern and a spectacular 18th-century cast-iron bathtub, sourced from a French château and restored with fresh enamel work.

The interiors are enriched with an intriguing selection of furniture spanning various time periods and styles. Key pieces include a vintage chocolate marble coffee table, Dutch Amsterdam School side tables, and rustic farmhouse furniture in the kitchen. These furnishings are paired with contemporary artworks by Amsterdam-based artist Berend Boorsma, juxtaposed with vintage artworks sourced during numerous sourcing adventures throughout the project.
