EAST AMSTERDAM VILLA

2024 | Bussum, The Netherlands

Avenue Design Studio presents a thoughtful renovation of a modest yet classic Dutch suburban villa on the eastern outskirts of Amsterdam, designed for a family of four, who recently returned to the Netherlands after living abroad. They entrusted the studio with the transformation of their newly acquired home — a purchase they made without seeing the property in person.. Under the direction of founding principal Holly Marder, the studio undertook an extensive redesign of the primary living spaces, including a garden-facing extension, to create a serene suburban retreat.

The renovation showcases the studio’s expertise in blending everyday functionality with timeless elegance. Every detail carefully considered to create an environment that reflects a unique set of requirements. From the marble encased entryway, to a floating bench in stained oak that spans the length of the front facade offering guests a place to perch; the custom-designed kitchen with its sleek tone-on-tone cabinetry and striking centrally placed island serving as the heart of the home; the handcrafted oak staircase that floats perpendicular to the dining area; the dedicated play area comprising of bespoke oak wrap-around cabinetry off the kitchen; the minimalist travertine-clad fireplace creating a soothing sanctuary in the garden-facing living room; the softness of linen drapery adorning the windows. Polished concrete floors paired with warm, inviting tonality and understated material finishes meet with a carefully curated array of furnishings that highlight diverse historical influences. This harmonious balance extends throughout the home with contemporary lighting and modern art. The studio’s thoughtful approach ensured that both our clients’ aspirations for elegance and sophistication along with the comfort of their children were seamlessly integrated. The success of the project is best captured in the reaction of the homeowners' young daughter, whose excitement upon moving in - captured on video - underscores the emotional impact of our work as a studio. This heartfelt response serves as a testament to Avenue Design Studio’s ability to translate a family's vision into a tangible, lived experience that resonates deeply with those who inhabit our spaces.
